Functional block diagram of the HSBT relay
General presentation
The HSBT system is an intelligent electronic control device (IED) designed to provide fast transfer from one source to another on busbar sections supplying asynchronous motors; this device offers a solution for source transfer applications where speed can be a crucial factor, up to a live busbar transfer. It belongs to the DAUT family within the PROTECTA range. In both hardware and software terms, this range is based on a modular device. Thanks to this architecture, the modules are assembled and configured according to the user’s needs; from then on, the software determines the functions (SFB).
The devices of the DAUT family are configured for various power network automation applications.
The EuroCAP configuration tool, available free of charge, provides a user-friendly and flexible application for protection, control and measurement functions, ensuring that the protection devices are fully customisable.

Applications
The availability of electrical power is crucial to ensure a reliable power supply for the essential processes of power plants and industrial installations where many asynchronous motors are used. The HSBT devices are designed to perform fast automatic switching to a back-up supply in the event of a trip of the main supply.
In addition, this function takes into account the voltage and frequency variations of the high power motors connected to the de-energised busbar, controlling the switching instant in order to avoid high current peaks and mechanical stress on the rotating machines.
The HSBT system integrates a wide range of control and supervision functions allowing full control and the implementation of user-defined interlocking schemes for the switchgear.
Field of application
- Ensuring a reliable, safe and uninterrupted power supply
- Support for simple and complex busbar applications (one HSBT function per circuit breaker)
- Guaranteeing the shortest possible fast switching time and a maximum level of safety
- Guaranteeing optimum protection of the power supply
- Instantaneous/fast/slow operation depending on amplitude, frequency, angle, df/dt conditions, status signals and settings.
- Switching can be triggered automatically or manually
Protection and control functions
The HSBT configuration measures the three-phase voltages on each side of the supported circuit breakers. Its main function is fast source transfer: the configuration contains as many cases as there are circuit breakers between which the transfer is to be performed. Each configuration is unique, depending on the actual supply/busbar arrangement, which can vary considerably but can nevertheless be handled thanks to the highly configurable logic of the device.
