Functional block diagram of the DTIVA/L relay
General presentation
The DTIVA/L relay is an intelligent electronic device for protection and control dedicated to distribution lines; it belongs to the DTIVA product family within the PROTECTA range.
DTIVA products are configured to protect, control and supervise the components of public and industrial distribution networks, including radial, ring and meshed distribution networks. Their main fields of application are radial networks whose neutral is not directly earthed. In this context, the use of Petersen coils or earthing resistors results in relatively low currents in the event of single-phase earth faults. Most protection functions rely on current measurement alone, but the integration of distributed generation or of loops in the network topology calls for additional voltage measurements as well as directional protection functions. Distance protection and line differential protection are also able to protect compensated or isolated neutral networks.
The EuroCAP configuration tool, available free of charge, provides a user-friendly and flexible application for protection, control and measurement functions, ensuring that the protection devices are fully customisable.

Applications
The DTIVA/L relay is designed to protect a complex network of overhead lines and cables on compensated or impedance-earthed networks. The main protection function of this intelligent electronic device (IED) is distance protection, which also handles so-called “cross-country faults”. The functions implemented cover a wide range of current- and voltage-based applications: directional overcurrent and earth fault protection, power calculation, as well as overvoltage and undervoltage protection.
Frequency protection functions are also included. All the functions required to control and monitor switchgear are integrated in the DTIVA/L relay. An auto-reclosing function with synchrocheck is also included.
Field of application
- Overhead lines and underground cables (back-up protection on HV networks) – overcurrent protection
- Directional earth fault detection in isolated, resistance-earthed or Petersen coil-earthed networks, based on directional residual overcurrent protection
- Directional overpower and underpower protection with user-defined power values and tripping angles (combined solution for active or reactive power)
- Five independent distance protection zones with polygonal characteristics.
- Handling of cross-country faults (phase preference can be set by parameter)
- Built-in fault locator
- Switchgear automation and control with optional synchrocheck
- User-defined interlocking schemes
- Current transformer supervision through unbalance protection
- Voltage transformer supervision and dead line detection
- Back-up protection unit for transformers, lines, generators, motors and busbars at all voltage levels
- Sensitive directional earth fault detection for permanent earth faults
- Sensitive directional earth fault detection for transient earth faults (restriking or self-extinguishing)
- Inrush current detection and blocking
- Reverse power protection
- Distribution load-shedding schemes
Protection and control functions
The DTIVA/L relay measures the three phase currents, the residual current as well as the three phase voltages and the busbar voltage. In addition to the current- and voltage-based functions, these measurements allow the directional extension of the configured phase and residual overcurrent functions, the directional overpower or underpower functions, as well as frequency-based protection functions.
The main protection function in this application is the distance protection function. Basically, this function generates three-phase tripping commands, but in the event of phase-to-phase faults it also uses the phase preference logic. The range of functions is completed by the auto-reclosing function and the synchrocheck.
