Functional block diagram of the DTIVA/MD relay
General presentation
The DTIVA/MD relay is an intelligent electronic device (IED) for protection and control dedicated to asynchronous and synchronous motors; it belongs to the DTIVA family within the PROTECTA product range.
DTIVA products are configured to protect, control and supervise the components of public and industrial distribution networks. Thanks to their modular architecture, the modules are assembled and configured according to the user’s needs; from then on, the software determines the functions (SFB).
The EuroCAP configuration tool, available free of charge, provides a user-friendly and flexible application for protection, control and measurement functions, ensuring that the devices are fully customisable.

Applications
The DTIVA/MD relay is designed to protect, control and supervise medium and high power three-phase motors. The IED offers a wide range of protection functions, based on current, voltage and temperature measurements: non-directional overcurrent protection, directional earth fault protection, motor differential protection, various voltage protection functions (overvoltage/undervoltage, negative sequence components, positive sequence components, residual voltage protection).
In addition to these basic functions, the relay offers a number of other special motor protection and supervision functions that allow it to protect and operate the motor more efficiently and more safely: motor thermal protection, motor start-up supervision, phase unbalance protection, loss of load protection, protection against prolonged start-up with locked rotor.
The relay can record the starting current, which is very useful for analysing the motor performance during the critical starting period.
In addition, the relay offers control, measurement and monitoring functions; it can therefore be used as a control device.
Field of application
- Motor protection in industrial networks and power plants
- Percentage differential protection
- Stator and rotor thermal overload protection
- Monitoring of the motor thermal state through the motor thermal replica function
- Voltage transformer supervision
- Phase reversal protection with overvoltage protection (negative sequence components)
- Motor start-up supervision
- Overload detection during operation
- Temperature monitoring through temperature sensors with RTD module
- Loss of load protection (undercurrent)
- Protection against instability due to undervoltage
- Back-up protection unit application
Protection and control functions
The DTIVA/MD relay is designed to protect high power motors on the medium voltage network. It measures the three-phase currents, the residual current as well as the three-phase voltages and the residual voltage. These measurements allow the operation of the current- and voltage-based functions.
In addition to the usual overcurrent (overcurrent, differential) and overvoltage protection functions, this configuration integrates special motor protection functions, such as a thermal replica function dedicated to motors, an unbalance overcurrent protection function, a phase loss protection, a loss of load protection and motor start-up supervision.
