Functional block diagram of the DTIVA/D relay

General presentation
The DTIVA/D relay is an intelligent electronic device for protection and control dedicated to distribution lines; it belongs to the DTIVA product family within the PROTECTA product range.
DTIVA products are configured to protect, control and supervise the components of public and industrial electrical distribution networks, including radial, ring and meshed distribution networks. Thanks to their modular architecture, the modules are assembled and configured according to the user’s needs; the software then determines the functions (SFB).
The main fields of application are impedance-earthed or isolated radial networks. In these cases, the use of Petersen coils or earthing resistors results in relatively low currents in the event of single-phase earth faults. Most protection functions rely on current measurement alone, but the integration of distributed generation or the presence of loops in the network topology calls for additional voltage measurements as well as directional protection functions. Distance and line differential protection functions are also available to protect compensated or isolated networks.
The EuroCAP configuration tool, available free of charge, provides a user-friendly and flexible application for protection, control and measurement functions, ensuring that the devices are fully customisable.

Applications
The DTIVA/D relay offers all the protection and control functions provided by the DTIVA/F relay: three-phase and single-pole overcurrent protection, switchgear control (and circuit breaker monitoring).
The DTIVA/D has a voltage measurement input; this additional voltage measurement is the basis for the directional element of the earth fault protection, for power calculation and for the overvoltage and undervoltage functions.
It is designed to provide main or back-up protection of overhead lines and cables on distribution networks (or HV networks) where the directional decision is essential to correct operation.
The configured functions are based on current and voltage measurements and are completed by an auto-reclosing function.
Field of application
- Overhead lines and underground cables (back-up protection on HV networks): overcurrent protection
- Directional earth fault detection in isolated, resistance-earthed and Petersen coil-earthed networks
- Directional overpower and underpower protection with user-defined power values and tripping angles (combined solution for active or reactive power)
- Switchgear automation and control
- User-defined interlocking schemes
- Current transformer supervision through unbalance protection
- Inrush current detection and blocking
- Back-up protection unit for transformers, lines, generators, motors and busbars at all voltage levels
- Optional use of decentralised busbar protection subunits
- Sensitive directional detection of permanent earth faults
- Sensitive directional detection of transient earth faults (self-extinguishing or restriking)
- Reverse power protection
- Protection against islanded operation of wind farms and photovoltaic installations
- Possible use as a substation computer
Protection and control functions
The DTIVA/D relay measures the three phase currents and the residual current, as well as the three phase voltages and the residual voltage. In addition to the current- and voltage-based functions, these measurements allow the directional extension of the residual overcurrent function, as well as directional overpower and underpower functions. This set of functions is completed by the auto-reclosing function.
Thanks to its built-in control, measurement and monitoring functions, this intelligent electronic device (IED) can also be used as a bay control unit.
