Functional block diagram of the S16/MDT relay
General presentation
The S16/MDT relay is dedicated to the protection of small and medium power asynchronous motors. This relay is fitted with two current units allowing the measurement of the three-phase currents and of the residual current, and with a single-phase voltage unit for the measurement of the residual voltage.
The devices of the SMARTLINE range, S16 series, are designed to provide compact, economical and simple solutions for feeder protection, motor protection and various types of back-up protection. These devices feature a predefined hardware layout and fixed standard configurations.
The relay is fitted with a USB 2.0 port at the front and a serial interface at the rear. The front port gives access to the device configuration, which the user can modify (thresholds, time delays, signalling, tripping matrix, etc.) using the S16 Tool software, available for free download on our website. The communication port at the rear of the device is reserved for the connection to the SCADA system (IEC 61-870).

Applications
The S16/MDT relay is specially designed to protect asynchronous motors.
The relay has 4 current inputs and one voltage input for the measurement of the residual voltage.
Despite its compact size, this intelligent electronic device (IED) offers a wide range of protection functions based on current measurements: non-directional overcurrent and directional earth fault protection (stator earth), thermal overload protection, phase loss and circuit breaker failure protection, as well as phase sequence reversal protection.
For motor applications, it has a start-up supervision function with restart inhibition, protection against frequent starts and undercurrent protection.
Protection and control functions
- Three-phase overcurrent protection
- Directional earth fault protection (stator earth).
- Monitoring of the motor heating by thermal image, based on the symmetrical components (positive and negative sequence) or on the temperature measurement by PTC probes
- Inrush current detection
- Current unbalance
- Fuse failure
- The relay protects motors during the starting phase and in operation.
- Excessively long start-up
- Number of starts
- Locked rotor
- Circuit breaker failure protection
- No-load running
