S16/M relay functional block diagram
General overview
The S16/M relay is mainly used to protect small and medium-power asynchronous motors in industrial installations.
The relay has 4 current inputs (phases and earth).
The devices in the SMARTLINE range, S16 series, are designed to offer compact, cost-effective and simple solutions for feeder protection, motor protection and various types of back-up protection. These devices feature a predefined hardware layout and fixed standard configurations.
The relay is equipped with a USB 2.0 port on the front and a serial interface at the rear. The front port is used to configure the device — settings that the user can modify (thresholds, time delays, signalling, tripping matrix, etc.) — using the S16 Tool software, available for free download from our website. The communication port at the rear of the device is reserved for connection to the SCADA (IEC 61-870).

Applications
The S16/M relay is specifically designed to protect asynchronous motors.
Despite its compact size, this intelligent electronic device (IED) offers a wide range of current-based protection functions: non-directional overcurrent and earth-fault (stator earth) protection, thermal overload protection, phase-loss and circuit-breaker failure protection, and phase-reversal protection.
For motor applications, it provides start-up supervision with restart inhibition, protection against frequent starts and undercurrent protection.
Protection and control functions
- Non-directional three-phase and residual (stator earth) overcurrent protection functions.
- Motor temperature-rise monitoring by thermal image based on symmetrical components (positive and negative sequence) or on temperature measurement via PTC probes
- Inrush current detection
- Current unbalance
- Fuse failure
- The relay protects motors during start-up and in operation.
- Excessive starting time
- Number of starts
- Locked rotor
- Circuit-breaker failure protection
- No-load running
