Functional block diagram of the S16/DT relay
General presentation
The S16/DT relay has an additional voltage input compared with the S16/F relay, which makes it possible to implement protection functions based on the residual voltage, such as directional residual overcurrent and residual overvoltage protection.
The relay has 4 current inputs and one voltage input.
The devices of the SMARTLINE range, S16 series, are designed to provide compact, economical and simple solutions for feeder protection, motor protection and various types of back-up protection. These devices feature a predefined hardware layout and fixed standard configurations.
The relay is fitted with a USB 2.0 port at the front and a serial interface at the rear. The front port gives access to the device configuration, which the user can modify (thresholds, time delays, signalling, tripping matrix, etc.) using the S16 Tool software, available for free download on our website. The communication port at the rear of the device is reserved for the connection to the SCADA system (IEC 61-870).

Applications
The S16/DT relay is mainly used as main or back-up overcurrent protection in electrical installations whose neutral is isolated from earth.
Field of application
- Non-directional overcurrent and directional earth fault protection functions for overhead lines and cables
- Inrush current detection function
- Thermal overload protection for lines, cables and transformers
- Current unbalance protection through negative sequence overcurrent
- Residual voltage protection based on the residual voltage measurement
- Permanent earth fault detection
- Circuit breaker failure protection
- The protection functions implemented provide complete back-up protection for lines, motors, transformers and generators in utility and industrial applications, where an independent and redundant protection system is required.
