Functional block diagram of the DTIVA/Di relay
General presentation
The DTIVA/Di relay is an IED dedicated to the protection, control and automation of MV power links. The relay performs complex protection, control and monitoring functions. It belongs to the DTIVA product family of the PROTECTA range. In hardware and software terms, this range is made up of modular devices. Because of this architecture, the modules are assembled and configured according to the user’s needs; from then on, the software determines the functions (SFB).
The DTIVA product type is configured to protect, control and supervise distribution and industrial networks, including radial, ring and meshed distribution networks.
The main fields of application are radial networks that are not directly earthed. In these cases, the use of Petersen coils or earthing resistors results in relatively low currents in the event of single-phase faults. Most protection functions rely on current measurement alone, but the integration of distributed generation or of ring architectures in the network calls for additional voltage measurements as well as directional protection functions. Distance and line differential protection functions are also available to protect compensated or isolated networks.
Thanks to the control, measurement and monitoring functions implemented, the DTIVA relay can also be used as a bay control unit.
The EuroCAP configuration tool, available free of charge, provides a user-friendly and flexible application for protection, control and measurement functions, ensuring that the protection devices are fully customisable.

Applications
The DTIVA/Di relay is the functional extension of the DTIVA/Fr protection device. Its range of functions covers all current- and voltage-based applications (directional overcurrent and earth fault protection, power calculation, overvoltage and undervoltage protection, frequency protection), including the cable/line differential protection function.
The dialogue between two DTIVA/Di differential protections takes place over an optical fibre link.
All the control and monitoring functions required to control and monitor switchgear are integrated in the DTIVA/Di relay. The auto-reclosing function is also included.
Field of application
- Overhead lines and underground cables (back-up protection on HV networks) – overcurrent protection
- Directional earth fault detection in isolated, resistance-earthed or Petersen coil-earthed networks, based on directional residual overcurrent protection
- Directional overpower/underpower protection with user-defined power values and tripping angles (combined solution for active or reactive power)
- Cable/line differential protection over optical fibre
- Current transformer saturation detection
- Transformers and compensation coils able to be handled inside the protected zone
- Optional restricted earth fault protection
- Switchgear automation and control
- Closing schemes can be defined by the user
- Current transformer supervision through unbalance protection
- Voltage transformer supervision and dead line detection
- Sensitive directional earth fault detection for permanent faults
- Sensitive directional earth fault detection for transient faults (restriking and self-extinguishing)
- Inrush current detection and blocking
- Reverse power protection
- Distribution load-shedding schemes
- Protection against islanded operation of wind or photovoltaic farms
Protection and control functions
The DTIVA/Di relay measures the three phase currents, the residual current as well as the three phase voltages and the residual voltage. In addition to the current- and voltage-based functions, these measurements allow the directional extension of the configured phase and residual overcurrent functions, but also the directional overpower and underpower functions. It is mainly intended for the protection of cables and lines. The range of functions is completed by the auto-reclosing function. Frequency is evaluated from the voltage measurement in order to implement frequency-based protection functions.
