General presentation
The DTRV/TZ relay is an intelligent electronic device (IED) for protection and control dedicated to two-winding transformers; this relay offers complex protection, control and monitoring functions for two-winding power transformers. It belongs to the DTRV product family within the PROTECTA product family.
The DTRV range is specially designed for the protection and control of power transformers, including generator-transformer units. In addition, the DTRV family includes a wealth of versatile protection functions to meet the most demanding user requirements.
Thanks to its built-in control, measurement and monitoring functions, this protection and control device can also be used as a bay control unit.
The EuroCAP configuration tool, available free of charge, provides a user-friendly and flexible application for protection, control and measurement functions, ensuring that the protection devices are fully customisable.

Applications

It belongs to the DTRV product family within the PROTECTA range.
The DTRV/HZ relay offers a varied range of versatile protection functions in addition to the main transformer impedance protection, such as three-phase, Io and I² overcurrent protection, restricted earth fault protection, etc.
The multiple three-phase and residual overcurrent protection functions implemented allow separate protection of the two transformer windings.
In addition, several voltage-based protection functions are available for one transformer winding, from the three-phase voltage measurement. The voltage measurement connections depend on the actual application.
The DTRV/HZ can be used as a back-up protection relay for downstream equipment (for example distribution lines and cables).
The device integrates a wide range of control and supervision functions, providing full control and user-defined interlocking schemes for the primary switchgear of the substation.

Protection and control functions
The DTRV/HZ protection device measures the three-phase currents, the residual current as well as the three-phase voltages. In addition to the current- and voltage-based functions, these measurements allow the directional extension of the configured residual overcurrent function, as well as the implementation of phase-to-phase fault protection functions through an underimpedance function with a circular characteristic centred on the origin, and a restricted earth fault protection against earth faults (high impedance protection). The latter effectively complements the percentage longitudinal differential protection of the power transformer.
The main protection function in this device is the underimpedance protection, which can be used for transformers fitted with only one current transformer (CT) and for which differential protection is therefore not possible. It also allows the protection of generators with a high synchronous impedance and without a booster to ensure a sufficient gap between the rated current of the unit and the fault current during a phase-to-phase fault.
