Functional block diagram of the DGEN/3 relay
General presentation
The DGEN/3 family (formerly DTRV/TGS) consists of two complete multifunction protections for generator-transformer units
- DGEN/3T: generator, unit transformer and auxiliary transformer protection
- DGEN/3TS: generator, unit transformer protection and automatic synchroniser
The DGEN/3TS is an intelligent electronic device (IED) for protection and control dedicated to generator-transformer units, with an automatic generator synchronising and coupling function; this relay offers complex protection, control and monitoring functions for generator / step-up transformer units, including the auxiliary transformer. It belongs to the DGEN/3 family (former reference: DTRV) within the PROTECTA range. This protection, in both hardware and software terms, is based on a modular device. Thanks to this modular architecture, the modules are assembled and configured according to the user’s needs; from then on, the software determines the functions.
The DGEN/3 family is specially designed for the protection and control of power transformers and generators, including generator-transformer units. It also integrates a wealth of versatile protection functions to meet the most demanding user requirements.
The EuroCAP configuration software, available free of charge, provides a user-friendly and flexible application for protection, control and measurement functions, allowing the use of fully customisable devices.

Applications
The DGEN/3 devices are designed to act as the main intelligent electronic device (IED) for protection and control of synchronous generators or complete generator units, including the step-up transformer and the auxiliary transformer, while also coupling the unit to the grid thanks to its automatic synchroniser function.
The DGEN/3 relays integrate various versatile protection functions in addition to the main differential protection, such as overcurrent, overvoltage/undervoltage and frequency protection. The other main function is the automatic synchroniser of the machine (DGEN/3TS). The devices also integrate several functions specially designed for generator protection, for example protection against heating caused by current unbalance, voltage-dependent overcurrent protection (voltage-controlled overcurrent), inadvertent energisation protection, loss of excitation, 100% stator earth fault protection, rotor earth fault protection, etc. It can be used as a back-up protection relay for downstream equipment (for example feeders, cables, etc.).
The DGEN/3 generator protection relays support two-circuit-breaker configurations. The synchroniser function available on the DGEN/3TS relay allows the whole unit to be coupled to the transmission or distribution grid.
These protection devices integrate a wide range of control and supervision functions allowing full control and the implementation of user-defined interlocking schemes for the primary switchgear of the substation.
Field of application
- Generator differential protection or unit differential protection at both ends
- When used as unit differential protection:
- Automatic compensation of the phase shift and transformation ratio of the step-up transformer
- 2nd and 5th harmonic restraint for inrush current and transformer overexcitation detection
- Protection functions specially designed for generator protection
- Voltage-dependent overcurrent protection
- Inter-turn fault protection for high power generators (current- or voltage-based, depending on the winding)
- Loss of excitation protection
- Pole slipping or loss of synchronism protection (phase shift)
- Rotor earth fault protection for insulated/unearthed or centrally earthed rotors
- Various types of stator earth fault protection (95%):
- Residual overcurrent (can be sensitive depending on the current transformer)
- Residual overvoltage
- Restricted earth fault
- Stator earth fault protection (100%):
- 3rd harmonic undervoltage
- 3rd harmonic differential overvoltage, by measuring the residual voltage at the neutral and at the connection point (two operating modes if a generator circuit breaker is present)
- Restricted earth fault protection
- The protection functions implemented provide back-up protection for downstream equipment (for example feeders, cables, etc.).
- Independent tripping logic and circuit supervision for each tripping circuit (circuit breaker, excitation, turbine valve, etc.)
- Support for two-circuit-breaker substations, such as breaker-and-a-half or ring bus topologies
- Current and voltage transformer supervision
- Programmable closing schemes
- Optional external unit:
- Remote I/O unit (RIO)
- Optional transducer I/O (RTD/mA)
Protection and control functions
All DGEN/3 configurations measure the three-phase currents on both sides of the generator (or on the generator neutral side and the high voltage side of the step-up transformer), the residual current(s), the three-phase generator voltages, as well as the residual voltage(s). The main protection functions are the generator (unit) differential protection, overcurrent protection, voltage-dependent overcurrent protection, frequency protection, loss of excitation protection and earth fault protection. Additional protection functions are available to provide the level of complexity required by the generator protection needs, as well as back-up protection for downstream equipment (for example distribution lines, cables, etc.).
